All Eyes Are On Iowa...

Yes, the eyes of the nation were on Iowa tonight as thousands of people went out to caucus. We decided to join them. After waiting over half an hour in a traffic line, I took a side street and parked quite a distance from the caucus site.

Each of the Rebublican candidates had tables set up in the foyer with their information. We bypassed these to try and get in line to register. Did I mention the chaos???? It was unbelievable!

Mike Huckabee was at our caucus and gave a short talk. We were unable to get into the auditorium, so had to watch on TV's that were set up in the main area. So much for thinking I might meet him and get my picture with him!!

It was amazing to see the thousands of people that turned out in Iowa's bitter cold weather to caucus. Over 5000 people showed up at a local middle school. This was WAY more than was anticipated or prepared for. (They had only printed 3700 ballots!!) As crazy and frustrating as it was, I am really glad we went. I'm now tired and ready for some sleep.

I'll blog again from somewhere warm and sunny. Sumo will be staying here with his friend who will be housesitting with him.

Until Next Time....

Have a great vacation. I am glad to see people that make use of their rights to vote. I think the world could be a different place if more people would do that.

The pictures of yout Iowa caucus are fascinating. They are particularly interesting since I own a farm in NW Iowa, that I pay property taxes to the county, et al, on, and I pay Iowa state income tax. But, since I don't live there, I can't vote in Iowa. That seems to be taxation without representation! My high school son brought that up to his government teacher today. The teacher didn't even have to think, before she agreed that that is exactly what it is. I know, get the violins out...but it really is true. I think the Boston Tea Party took place over that minor issue. But, that is no one's fault here; it's just the way the laws are. I am glad that you both went and voted last night.

I hope you all have a good, warm vacation! Poor Sumo...I'm glad you at least have someone staying in your house with him. He is still going to be so totally lonesome for you. I know my two dogs would be for me. :-)

I'm glad you wrote about your experience with the caucus. I watched all the speeches that night. The next day I asked my children - 13,14,and 15 who won the Iowa Caucus and none of them even knew what it was! One had an idea that it had something to do with politics. My son thought it was a flower! He at least was able to name two presidential candidates. Enjoy your time away!

wow, so psyched to get your first hand view of the caucuses! I was up late watching all of the fanfare and tomorrow, for New Hampshire, I'm conflicted. Should I watch the returns or go to a knitting event sponsored by my LYS???

Thank you for the peek inside of a caucus. The only other one I've seen was a little bit of one on PBS. I read your vacation cruise post above and it must be great to be out of all that freezing weather! Lovely cruise ship. Enjoy!
