Time's They Are A Changing....

Well, it has happened. I knew someday it would. Even on the day over 22 years ago when I became a mom for the first time, I knew that someday I would have to let them go. I told myself I needed to hold them close.. but not too tight, or the letting go would be too hard. Well, I think I may have been holding on a little too tight!! I need a few days (or weeks) to process these changing times. I really am excited for all of the kids. This is what you raise them to do. To go out on their own. Yes, to leave you. And, yes, I've known it from the beginning. Still doesn't make it any easier. Just saying.

Even Sumo is sad. Since his earliest memory 11 years ago he's been watching over the kids. Greeting them enthusiastically every day when they got home, whether from school or work or a friend's house (or even just walking down the driveway to get the mail!!). He's played fetch with them. He's been available 24/7 for loving on.

HE didn't know that the kids would someday leave. Leave and not take him. Yes, he's very sad.

I do try and cheer him up by reminding him he still has the excitement of watching me knit to look forward to everyday. It doesn't seem to help.

I know somehow we will get through this. Parents and dogs have been letting kids go for centuries. Right?

In knitting news, I did get the sweater set finished for the Cubs For Kids Charity project.
Being an avid Vikings fan, Sumo was very willing to put on his game hat and model with Bear. This was such a fun, easy set to make. I really need a set in each of the kids' school colors. And of course a bear to go with each. That might be a fun project....

I know you all worried about Bear heading off to college cold after I sent the sweater set away. But not to worry. Kirstin quickly found a skein of yarn and whipped him up a sweater set of his own. She even made ear holes in his hat for him!! Lucky Bear!

(OK, can you tell Sumo is a little needy right now....needing a little extra attention? Having to be in ALL the photos? Good thing he's so cute!!)

And here you see Bear and Flip Flop (Kirstin's dog) settled into dorm life on the top of her loft. Sumo and I are both counting on them to watch over her. I'll let you know how they do!!

Until Next Time....

Oh my gosh! My 22 year old still hasn't left me (I don't really mind, but I wish he would get a job) and my 17 year old will be going off to college next year. And then I will be feeling the same as you do now...S A D! Love the Teddy sweaters and hats. Great job.

I feel for you Janice...with only one in college, I still have two to go and in a few years I'll be in your shoes.

I'm sure Sumo will do his best to keep you from being lonely. I'm sure he is loving every minute of all the extra attention :)

happy knitting :)

Sumo is a GOOOOOOOOOD boy. If I tried to put Ziggy in a photo with anything even RESEMBLING a dog toy OR a knitted object, both would be reduced to shreds before I could even power up my camera!!!

You guys will be okay... just keep obsessively knitting to keep your mind occupied. That's a healthy coping skill, right? Right? RIGHT?!?!?!?!

Mine's getting ready to move into the dorm too - it will be strange not seeing her around. Cheer up though, if we did our job right, they'll be just fine :-)

Mine will be out of the nest during the next 6 years too-my 15yearold probably leaving in a year...and I keep wondering:" Have I prepared him for that???" It's scary!
From what I've read out of your blog, yours will be doing great! And so will you and Sumo!
Take care, have a nice weekend:-)

Hi everybody!
Thanks to all of you for you thoughts and kind words. I'm making it through the day.. somehow :-) As for the sweater pattern, it is on the link for Cubs for Kids. They have patterns there for knitters and crocheters. I did the knit pattern for top down raglan sweater. Kind of vague directions.. but they worked. For the scarf, I cast on 10 stitches and stockinette for about 20 inches. The hat is a pattern that JKnits sent me from www.knitaway.blogspot.com. (She also knit a sweater set). I see several more of these in my future! In fact, I plan on getting 3 cute bears and knitting a set in each of the kids' school colors. How cute would that be??
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Hang in there! I can only imagine. My day will come and I'm sure it will be bittersweet. (It's hard to imagine, actually) At least you stil have your pups at home. Sumo is such a good model! And that picture of him as a Viking- hilarious!!

My brother and sister-in-law have had all four of their (admittedly brilliant) children skip a grade in school. My husband and I have always thought that was kind of foolish...mainly because it meant that the kids would be leaving home earlier.

I'm not looking forward to having mine leave home at all....that is, most days, I mean:)

Aww! Poor Sumo! But he looks so cute in the hat!

Feel better soon, time flies, you know. (Sure tell me that next year!)

Hang in there! The house will be quiet, but the kids will come home, and I see daughter has checked in already. Sweet. Mine is starting college this year but at the last minute decided to change schools and stay home, going to college in our home town. While I'm elated to have her here with me, I feel she's missing out on some exciting times and opportunities to grow. It's a different kind of bittersweet to deal with. Parenting is hard.

I have a long time (though it will go really fast) before Elisabeth leaves for college. Hang in there. How far away did she go????

I love Sumo's game hat! Hang in there - I know it was very hard for my Mom when we all left but eventually she found lots of new friends and activities. And then of course the grandchildren started . . . . When I started worrying about the girls leaving I went and had a third! Now I'll be dealing with the school district until I'm 110!

I know that has to be hard, especially to have your youngest go off to college for the first time! My oldest goest to college some 450 miles from here, yet it is still in Michigan, and he left for the fall term on Thursday. My youngest is a sophomore in high school, so I will see this in 3 years or so. Hang in there! :-

I love your teddy bear sweater sets; how cute! I think you should get 4 bears (one for you to dress as a Viking)!

Sending hugs your way. We just have to trust we have done a good job and set good examples for them. Easy for me to say now, I still have 3 years until mine start heading out for college.

Your sweater turned out great as did Kirstin's.
Sumo is such a good natured dog, letting you photograph him in all the props.

my son's birds are sad too. It is unbelievable that they know his footsteps. I don't seem to make a difference to them, they want my son back. I wonder if I can smuggle them in his dorm?
